For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. - Nelson Mandela
** Notice the title of this piece is "surrender?". There is a question mark on the end of it. This piece was created with the idea of "hands up, don't shoot" and yet as it developed I realized that depending on the context and setting in which it was placed, it could be perceived as submission to God, or a prayerful stance. In a religious context surrender is often a challenge and one that people grapple with. In a social context it is a question of survival based on dissolving the appearance of a threat. Both gestures are acts of faith with the hope of survival.
