the entanglement of black men in America
2014
wire
38 in. (h) x 28 in. (w) x 16 in. (d)
entangle, entanglement :
- to ensnarl, intertwine, enmesh
- to involve in difficulties
- to twist together or entwine into a confusing mass, snarl
- a complicated or compromising relationship or situation
- an extensive barrier
The black hoodie became a symbol of racial profiling in the wake of the Trayvon Martin murder in 2012 and evoked conversations regarding race from people of all walks of life. While the wire captures the essence of an invisible occupant in the garment, it also can be viewed as part of the entanglement -- a barrier, an obstacle, an imposed limitation.
